I went to see The Hobbit movie two nights ago with my family. Some of the verses in today’s reading from Proverbs 2 make me think of the slimy, evil orcs that “walk in dark ways,” and the smaller folk that bravely proceed on their quest anyway.
But even more I’m seeing a familiar image, like one I saw in the first chapter yesterday; wisdom as a woman raising her voice in warning to those who reject instruction, knowledge, and advice. Chapter 2 looks similar. A parent instructs the child, “…and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.” Proverbs 2:3-5 NIV.
Wisdom is calling out in chapter one, and in chapter two I’m admonished to do the calling out. Maybe this speaks to me because I’m normally an introvert, a quiet person, kind of like a hobbit. But seriously, I’ve got to go on a search for wisdom like I need its hidden treasures desperately–because I do need them desperately. Many verses in chapter two talk about the difficulties and death that lie in the path. Wisdom will help me stay close to the One who “… guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.” (verse 8)
