In God’s Hands – Proverbs 21

It’s hard to get in a panic about politics or the economy, or whatever the topic of the day is, when I remember this proverb. God’s directing the hearts of our leaders as easily as channeling water “wherever he pleases.” The next verse puts the responsibility on me to live uprightly; not by what my leaders say or what seems right, but as God directs. He weighs my heart.

“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.” Proverbs 21:1 NIV

“All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart.” 21:2

This next proverb convinced me I needed to improve my saving habits. Believe it or not, for many years I believed it was selfish to hang on to our savings when there were so many others with needs. In prayer one day I felt a gentle reprimand when I was asking God for something. I felt his answer was, “I’ve already given you what you’re asking, but you gave it away.” I believed he wanted me to learn to be a better manager.

“In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” 21:20
