The Motive of the Heart – Proverbs 16

I’m so convinced of my own innocence, until I uncover the motives in my heart. Then I know I’m busted. Yes, my motive was to grab some attention for myself, not necessarily to ease someone else’s burden; or to get done quicker so I could chat with a friend, instead of doing my work with excellence as unto the Lord; or whatever other excuse I come up with.

These two verses from Proverbs 16 are listed together perfectly. The answer to keeping my motives right is for me to commit everything I do to the Lord.

“All a man’s ways seem innocent to him, but motives are weighed by the Lord. Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:2-3 NIV.

Whatever I do. One thing I like about this is I have lots of things to do, so that means I’ll be talking with God a lot during the day. That’s reward enough, but there’s the promise that my plans will succeed, as well – because they’re committed to him.

“Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” Proverbs 16:20 NIV.

  1. I AM one of His favorites!! And so are you! Isn’t it GOOD to belong to Him?!! As for doves, thats what he sent to Noah after the flood, and to Jesus when He was baptised!

  2. That’s fun that we both caught the same theme today. Although, I’m not sure I’ve imagined the Lord throwing chocolate at me before. Maybe you’re one of his favorites. (Are they Dove’s?)

  3. Well said, Kathy! I read your comments for the day after I wrote my own thoughts. There are so many verses to choose from each day. interesting that we went the same way in this chapter! Here’s mine from verses 3 and 9:

    Guaranteed Success! Proverbs16

You know the famous line from “Forrest Gump” –
“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get”.

It’s true! Nobody knows what life will deal him. We can make all kinds of plans, but not be able to carry them out for one reason or another.

BUT there is a way to be sure! The Lord knows all things – even which ‘chocolate’ life is going to throw at us! So naturally He will know the best course of action for us to take. If we look to Him for wisdom and direction for our lives, He won’t steer us wrong. We can be sure that His plans for us will succeed!

3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do,
    and your plans will succeed.

9 In his heart a man plans his course,
but the Lord determines his steps.
