If someone told me to put all my money on something, I’d be sure to respond with suspicion. I’m frugal by nature, and a red flag would wave vigorously in my mind. But look what I found in Proverbs 4.
“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding (Proverbs 4:7 NIV).
Really, I should spend everything I have for understanding?
“My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (verses 20-23).
It helps that the first verses reveal the heart of a father who was taught by his own father. And that he strongly urges his son to take these words to heart as well.
This is what’s promised if I follow his teaching:
It will bring me life. Wisdom will protect and watch over me. It will exalt me, honor me, and crown me. It will give me life. I will be led unhindered along straight paths.
Now those are good incentives to apply myself to learning wisdom—well worth the cost of all I have.
