Will There Always Be Winter? – Genesis 8:22

I mailed a large box of Christmas gifts to Florida yesterday, and it feels like a major portion of my holiday tasks are done. Not only am I noticing a lightheartedness, but there’s a lift in my step as I search for a different view of the color that greets me in the sky.

And there it is! Yellow and orange spread across the horizon, making the blue edges grow even more blue, the brightness even more bright. I’m mesmerized by the artwork changing right before my eyes.

I’ve had a tough year. You likely have your own list of sorrows, pains, disappointments, and maybe even trauma. Yet here is color and light given freely on a cold winter morning six days before Christmas, when my expected behavior would have been to rush through the morning with my head-down-eyes-glued somewhere else. There are more tasks to accomplish, after all.

But I noticed this display. What a treat!

I calm my thoughts and consider where I am with God in this moment, and find encouragement in his promise to Noah:

While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

Genesis 8:22 ESV

I still deeply feel the pain of the past several months. My concerns are still concerning, but there will be more changing of the seasons as long as I walk this planet. I will not always be where I am now.

Prayer

Lord, thank you for the promise of cyclical changes that will remain sure as long as there is earth. It brings me comfort to know you have this whole business in your hands, because you always do what you say you’ll do.
