Welcome to the website of an author and devotional writer who is following Jesus through the second half of her life.

I took it hard when I discovered I’d worked myself out of my dream job of mothering young children.

They are all grown and building legacies of their own. The mismatched silverware and handwritten recipes relocated to my daughter’s kitchen. The cracked mugs are gone. The old towels I planned to keep as cleaning rags? They went to Goodwill because my house stays cleaner now. I stashed a few toys for future visitors, but I don’t live in a kid castle any more. In fact, things get uncomfortably quiet around here.

Hopefully, your life transitions are less bumpy than mine.

I have cherished the Bible since the age of nine when I received a gift Bible with my name engraved on the cover. I continue to savor its gritty and breathtaking reality every day. I hope my blog posts, devotionals, and books shine a light on this valuable resource for your life as well.

A little history

I‘m a contributing author of Jesus Talked to Me Today: True Stories of Children’s Encounters with Angels, Miracles, and God, by James Stuart Bell. My story, “Jesus in My Pocket,” tells how I embraced Jesus as my best friend when the tiny doll I hid in my school desk proved to be an unreliable companion. Soon after the book released I wrote more stories from my childhood and entered them in the Oregon Christian Writers Cascade contest, for which I became a finalist.

I asked God for the gift of children because I believe parenting is the most creative, fulfilling, and challenging job on the planet—elements that help me grow and continually look to God for guidance and intervention.

My husband of more than forty years is Jerry, and at last count we had eight grandchildren, the most recent arriving through fostering and adoption.

As a wife, mother, and homemaker, and now in my writing, I follow Jesus’s example by drawing life lessons from things we know, like rain storms, seeds, and parties. I might as well copy the greatest storyteller of all time.

Here’s more fascinating stuff

  • The final edits on my devotionals for Pathways – Moments with God are complete and due to appear in the Winter 2019-2020 edition. I’ve been writing for Warner Press since 2016.
  • I serve on the hospitality team at Oregon Christian Writers conferences, which occur four times a year.
  • I’m learning to play classical guitar.
  • My favorite activities include relaxing by a camp fire, swimming, playing with children, exploring new landscapes and cultures, reading, and anything that involves being with my family.

  1. “Twas nice to meet you at the Books & Such blog, Kathy, and thank you for your kind words about my blog. I popped over here to know you better and discovered that we’re kindred spirits in parenting other people’s children. My hubby and I were houseparents early on in our marriage (17 boys total, no more than 11 at a time). Later we added brothers to our family (ages 5 & 8 when they came to us), first as foster children, later adopted. I also work in health care, We’re on opposite sides of the country, but overlap in so many ways.

    Pleased to make your acquaintance!

    • It’s nice to meet you too, Shirley. Wouldn’t it be amazing if our paths crossed one day? We’d certainly have a lot of stories to share. My husband isn’t much of a traveler, so we usually don’t find occasion to leave Oregon unless it’s to hug the grandchildren who live in Florida.
